Re: Labour’s Response to the Economic Crisis
Greetings!
Two weeks ago, the CLC Executive Council passed a resolution calling on the CLC to develop a mobilization plan using all the resources of the movement, to focus attention on key elements of the economic crisis and the effect on working people – changes to Employment Insurance, retirement and pension security, bank bailouts and interest rate spreads. The plan would include rallies and demonstrations in major cities, and an ongoing education and advocacy campaign.
Since then, we have been working to develop a comprehensive campaign plan, including polling to test framing, slogans and campaign look. I have attached a draft outline of possible campaign components for your review, and welcome your feedback.
Our primary goal in the short term is however, to pull together rallies to focus attention on the key issues, in particular EI. The first two would occur in March, with more rallies for the Spring.
The first two raillies will be held in :
London-St. Thomas, ON Saturday, March 14
Hamilton, ON Saturday, March 21
What do we need from you?
We need your commitment to bring members out to participate in raillies and demonstrations. There is a lot of public anger and frustration about the economic crisis out there and unions and federations may already be planning raillies in communities. If so, please let us know when and where. We’d like to work with you to have consistent theme and messages around EI.
We need you to assign key people in your organization – in your education, communications and political action / campaigns departments – to join various working groups that are developing components of the campaign plans.
We need your commitment to a coordinated Labour Day message about this crisis and what’s needed for change.
In Solidarity,
Ken Georgetti
President
