The BC Federation of Labour has made a statement regarding the supposed shutdown of West Coast ports on Monday, December 12, 2011. In the statement the BC Fed supports the Occupy movement’s desires for fairness in our society, but states that any action that prevents it’s members from performing their assigned duties in a safe environment will not be supported.

Local 505 retired President Jack Micholuk passed away on December 7, 2011. ILWU Canada remembers Jack during his 2010 interview in Prince Rupert for the celebration of 100 years on the waterfront. Jack shares his thoughts about what it used to be like.

President of the International, Bob McEllrath, released this statement in response to the Occupy Wall Street Movement and reports that the group is calling for the shutdown of ports on the West Coast. The International has stated that any shutdown of any ports along the West Coast are not sanctioned by the membership of the ILWU. Furthermore, the letter identifies the struggle with EGT as seperate from the Occupy movement, and stresses the importance of keeping the two unrelated. Statement from the International re: Occupy Wall Street

There are rumors of the Occupy Vancouver movement descending on the Port of Vancouver on December 12th, 2011. The ILWU Canada does not support this action in any manner.

The disruption of any of the Ports in British Columbia under the jurisdiction of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union by any outside group, organization or individuals will not be condoned by the ILWU Canada Officers or Affiliates.
